"Why does she always have to steal the spotlight?"
This question is not new. Even back when humans first began hunting aurochs, we worked in close-knit groups. But when the clan gathered around the fire in the evening, there was only one who could boast of having thrown the deadly spear.
And I wonder if that sometimes annoyed the others?
Because that's how it is.
Whether we are talking about hunter clans or modern family businesses, there is typically one person who is more visible than the others. This is the person who leads the way; the leader. And leading and being seen can cause frustration among others if they do not feel seen and appreciated.
Are you the one who takes the lead?
So remember: if the rest of the company's managers and employees did not perform their roles competently, you would never succeed as a business leader yourself.
You are welcome to share your successes. Of course you may.
But don't forget to highlight the people who made them possible. They took a risk and performed an essential task with skill—and they have a legitimate expectation of reaping your praise and recognition, as well as that of others.
Without them, there was no organization to succeed; no functions to work together to deliver a high-quality end product.
Be especially mindful when your circle consists of family members. Rivalries and similar dynamics can be amplified when carried over into business life, and therefore your siblings', cousins', or other relatives' need for recognition may be just as significant as anyone else's.
